All relevant data are within the paper and its Supporting Information files. Abstract Background Historically, neural tube defects NTDs have predominated in female infants but the reasons remain unclear. During the post- FAF period, unpublished routine reports have indicated changes in the sex ratio for these defects while some descriptive reports are controversial. To date and to our knowledge, however, no studies specifically focusing on these changes to test this hypothesis directly have been undertaken. The differences-in-differences method and Poisson regressions were used to evaluate the sex ratio shift from female to male before vs. Results and conclusions In Chile and Argentina the prevalence of NTDs, particularly anencephaly and cervico-thoracic spina bifida, showed a greater reduction rate in females than in males after FAF, resulting in a change of the sex ratio of infants with NTDs.
Gonorrhea mutates in the pharynx, making oral sex far more risky than people think. Illustration by Chad Hagen In January, , a thirty-one-year-old prostitute visited a clinic in Kyoto, Japan, for a routine checkup. Because sex workers are so likely to acquire sexually transmitted diseases, many have themselves checked for infections even in the absence of symptoms. Indeed, although the woman displayed no outward signs of gonorrhea, her lab test came back positive; she carried the gonococcus microbe in her throat, a common reservoir.
Role in puberty During puberty, the body produces more estrogen and progesterone. Females typically enter puberty between the ages of 8 and 13 years , and puberty usually ends when they are around 14 years old. During puberty, the pituitary gland starts producing larger quantities of luteinizing hormone LH and follicle-stimulating hormone FSH , which stimulates the production of estrogen and progesterone.
